I recently gave a TEDx Talk called “The Time of Your Life: How AI Will Give You More of It”. The process of applying and preparing was new to me, but it seemed my “Idea” hit a cord. TED is all about sharing “Ideas The Matter”.
After getting accepted, my talk’s first draft was extensive and covered many of the topics that I’ve explored on this blog about the future of retirement; the coming technological disruption, and the impacts of healthy life extension. But did you know that TED requires that you get coaching on your talk? My coach thought my first draft had too many topics. The idea he said was to have ONE key idea and base everything around that.
Finding My One Idea
So what could my one idea be I wondered? Then I considered the 2 main themes I write about; how exponentially advancing technologies (like AI) will disrupt the world as we know it with massive automation, robotics, and so on – and secondly how advances in medicine will lead to dramatically extended healthy life spans. My focus is how these two areas will impact and disrupt our whole notion of “Retirement”… hence “Retirement Singularity”.
So I was looking for a common theme and hit upon “Time”. AI and robotics will lead to massive time savings (not to mention job loss for many – that’s another topic) as it takes over much of our mundane work. And “Time” also relates to getting more time to live! So I reworked my presentation all around time.
Exponential Advances Will Save Time AND Give Time
